Life, as we know it, is one hard road of bumps and bruises. Injuries that we have to bear, pain that we have to suffer. What matters however is to keep going, to keep walking- with spirit and resolve- despite anything.

I once read somewhere that life is like a game of cards. The cards we get to play is luck. We’ve no control over that. But how we play our game, well, that’s entirely up to us. Sure, it would be so easy to walk out on a losing game. What needs courage is to keep playing, to keep striving for a victory, even in the face of assured defeat.

And then, when we reach the final destination, even if bloodied and broken, we may yet keep our head unbowed. For we tried, and THAT, my friends, is a victory in itself.

 Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the Pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

 *

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

 *

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

 *

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate;

I am the captain of my soul.
